-Heart-Heart-Heart-

In a year and a half I've gone from zero to over 10,000 watchers. Sounds totally crazy, even to me. (Though I'm super appreciative!) I'm writing this journal out to explain to ya'll how that happened and how I continue to increase my number of watchers. Hopefully the information here can help you in growing your own audience :) (Smile)

Three quick disclaimers first before I get into the nitty-gritty of things:

1. These are not the only ways one can market themselves. This is just how I went about/continue to go about doing things. It's what I found most easiest and convenient for me. I'm no marketing expert, I learned all this stuff along the way.

2. Marketing is not a bad thing! I've seen the most skilled and beautiful artwork go unseen because no one knows it exists. I've seen some average work get insane attention that it's beyond belief. The difference is getting the word out and being seen. Why do you buy certain foods, clothes, games, books, movies? You were shown advertisements for them be it on TV, the internet, etc. Businesses can only make money by letting other people know they exist. If you didn't know about 'X Chocolate Bar,' you wouldn't buy it. Marketing is not selfish, it's a part of growing your audience, finding people that would have otherwise not have heard about you or your work but are potential fans.

3. Watchers are not numbers, they're people. While it can be disheartening to see a small number, remember, each of those numbers has a person behind them who liked your work enough to want to continue to see more. :) (Smile)

--

Alrighty, these are in no particular order other than the order they popped up in my head to write down xD

Bullet; Black Dahub/Similar Services
For those of you who don't know what dAhub is, it's an account using a bot (aka program) to automatically give out points to people in exchange for services. You can check out the page to learn more, but it's essentially a way for people to pay to have people watch/fav/llama their accounts/work. The idea is that new people will discover you via this system, and if they like your work enough, they'll hop on for a ride. Granted, not everyone uses that account that way, so you can end up with what amounts to fake watchers, which is rather disappointing but inevitable, given human greed, haha.

I personally have myself featured on there twice. I use the points feature where I pay to have my account be placed in the "Watch" section, and I also paid to have myself featured on the main journal on the front page under "Exclusive Features." Both involve the use of money (unless you also use the account to earn your own points), but as they say, you need to spend money to earn money, or in this case, you need to spend money to market yourself.

I've garnered quite a bit of attention from using this account and I think it's definitely worth dropping at least 100 points (for the bonus) to try it out, if you're curious to see how it'll go.

Bullet; Yellow Llamas
This is an easy and quick one to do, also a great way to check out other people's works as well :) (Smile) Often when people get llamas, they'll check out the person who gave it to them. It's a nice free way to advertise yourself. (It also tends to make people happy, from what I've noticed, so that's a great bonus!)

Bullet; Red Commenting
General commenting on other people's works, responding to comments you receive, thanking people for watches/favs/etc., etc. It helps you stay active in the community, shows you're active, and helps you feel more involved with your audience/fans. I do try my best to reply to every comment I get as I know people appreciate it. Unfortunately I don't always have time for this one since I have loads on my plate almost always, but if you have the spare moments for this, it's definitely worth it.

Bullet; Green Getwatchers.com
A website specifically designed for Deviantart in helping people get their works discovered and for discovering new works. It encourages commenting, favoriting, and watching others. You earn points in viewing artwork and extra points for comments/favs/watches. Points equal views, so the more points you earn, the more views you'll receive. The service is free! so definitely take advantage of it!

Bullet; Blue Social Media - Reddit, Tumblr, YouTube, Etc.
I'm no expert on advertising myself on these websites, but sharing your works there can help in getting more attention on your works. Be sure to link back whatever you share to you Deviantart account (or to wherever you want people to be able to find you). It's good to have a central location/base.

For YT specifically, I share time lapse video recordings of my drawings, both chibi and more. I use OBS to record my screen then Windows Live Movie Maker (WLMM) to speed it up.

Bullet; Purple DA Groups
Find groups that have relevancy to the works you create, join and share with them. (This one is rather self-explanatory, haha.)

Bullet; Pink Post Often/Be Active
As much as possible, without overworking yourself, be active. Posting often increases the chances of things being seen by people who don't already watch you. Creating works often also gives you more practice and experience which helps increase your skill level as an artist, making more people interested in your works as you continue to improve and grow! :D (Big Grin)

Bullet; Orange Conventions
Not everyone may be able to do this one, I'm aware, but as I said, this is a list of how I went/go about advertising myself. I go to cons, albeit, not often, but when I table at Artist Alley, I give out business cards which list off my main ways of contact (dA, email, YT, etc). If you don't have the money/(insert any other reason) to table at conventions, but can afford to go, it can be fun and worthwhile to talk to and interact with other artists there. Don't start off advertising your stuff, but begin a conversation, show interest in their works/them as a person, and be willing to trade contacts.

Bullet; White Give Back - Giveaways, Features, Tutorials, Etc.
Giving back not only shows your appreciation for your friends and fans, but also can bring about a lot of joy for everyone. Giving can feel good and so can receiving. You can do it in all sorts of ways, not just the ones I listed above. Play around and see what works.

As a personal example, I like to feature artwork my watchers created. I've tried in the past just generally featuring them, but I noticed a lack of interaction and response. Their works just didn't garner as much attention as I would have wished them to. Thus, I changed things around and experimented. I tried to feature works along with a point giveaway, but people, understandably, only cared about the points. I next tried to build incentive, stating that in order to be featured, people would have to comment on other featured artworks. I had some response, but again, not as much as I hoped. Learning from those experiences, I decided to combine the two, offer points like people want, but also getting comments on my watcher's works. Noticing the success, I have continued to run my giveaways/features in that way. (Of course, if anyone wants to take this idea, go for it!)

--

The above list is currently how I go about marketing myself, if I ever encounter/figure out new ways of doing so, I'll add them to this list. Of course, I always recommend Google searching on the subject ("marketing") and see if you can learn other ways of building an audience. Trust me, this is a small list, haha. Though for now, hopefully this can give ya'll some insight into how to get yourself out there!

If you have any advice of your own, feel free to comment below :D (Big Grin)

Hello Ringo. It's so awesome of you to share some of your knowledge with us like this. I'm new to DA and this article has definitely cleared up some confusion for me ( as well as shown me what I have not been doing before).

I look forward to looking at some of your work within my spare time this weekend. If it's okay with you, may I also check out your profile?
In return, please feel free to drop me a message some time. :)

Yah, you too. And I shouldn't be so selfish, that information is not just for me, it's for everybody!

It's funny, I just read a book on that, gaining an audience, and it was most of the things you seem to have learned from experience. It's nice to know you've come so far!

And you also helped me appreciate that I should say thank you when someone gives me a badge. Before, I didn't really understand what those things are supposed to do, so I didn't really know how I should feel if I got one.

And it's true, when people "watch" you (and I also just recently figured out "watch" was a good thing and not a police patrol thing), that it's an individual, not a number.

How are you doing today btw?

Thank you :) We artists gotta help each other out ;P

Learning from experience is definitely a nice way to go about it, but outside assistance can be helpful in its own way as well :) Thank you though! It's nice to have awesome people supporting me!

It's not a necessity, but you're more than welcome to thank those who give them to you. ^^

I'm doing quite well, hopefully all is well with you :D
